VIENNA, 7 June (UN Information Service) – Brazil signed the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation, also known as the “Singapore Convention on Mediation”, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 4 June 2021. With its signature, Brazil becomes the fifty-fourth signatory to the treaty.

The Singapore Convention on Mediation facilitates international trade and promotes mediation as an alternative and effective method of resolving commercial disputes by providing an effective mechanism for the enforcement of international settlement agreements resulting from mediation.

The Convention is open for signature, ratification, and accession by States and regional economic integration organizations. There are six State Parties to the Convention and the treaty entered into force on 12 September 2020. With the addition of Brazil, fifty-four States have signed the Convention since it opened for signature on 7 August 2019, making it one of the most successful multilateral treaties prepared by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
